The objective of the Crawford Hall Pool Replacement Project, which began on June 1,
1998 and finished on April 1, 1999, was to build a state of the art facility capable
of servicing an intercollegiate Water Polo program, a Men's & Women's Swimming
team, a Diving team, Student/Faculty/Staff recreational swimmers, a Master's Swim
program, and a youth swim club. To achieve this goal, the pool, measuring
210 feet by 75 feet, is large enough to accommodate either two swim meets or two
water polo matches simultaneously. The $2.8 million facility features two 2-meter & four 3-meter diving stands, 18 starting platforms, an in-deck timing system, quality night lighting and a movable bulkhead that enables our staff to program the pool in a variety of configurations. However, the most interesting feature of this new venue is the water depth. The water ranges from 7 to 13 feet deep, a desirable feature in competitive pool designs. There is less underwater turbulence in pools where the water depth exceeds 6 feet. The lack of bounce back turbulence from the pool bottom, seen in shallow pools, enables an athlete to swim faster, all other factors being equal. This facility was built by Swinerton-Walberg and designed by Cannon-Parkin in association with Rowley International, Inc. The aquatics pavilion is a two-story building that features a first floor comprised of an office suite containing eight offices, a reception area, and four separate team/locker rooms. The second floor is comprised of one large sub-dividable conference space with food service and storage facilities. Additionally, the development of a stadium seating will include an upper trellised concourse connected to the Aquatics Pavilion, a Ticket/Entrance courtyard and underneath storage. |
