The UC Irvine Spirit Squad consists of the Coed and All-Girl Cheerleaders, the Dance Team, and our beloved mascot, Peter the Anteater!

Our squads support the UC Irvine Athletics programs by generating crowd enthusiasm, promoting school spirit, and supporting our student-athletes throughout the year. You can find the UC Irvine Spirit Squad members at all men's and women's home basketball games, the Big West Tournament in Anaheim, and various other Anteater games and events. 

The UC Irvine Spirit Squad members are great ambassadors of not only the University, but the surrounding community as well. Spirit Squad members participate year-round in a variety of appearances, alumni events, community service opportunities, and charitable events, generating energy and excitement for UC Irvine.

JOIN THE TEAM!

We are looking for highly committed, talented, and enthusiastic individuals who want to be a part of a fun and exciting team environment, and will represent our University with pride and confidence! Being a member of the UC Irvine Spirit Squad is a year-long commitment. We typically practice twice a week (Sunday and Wednesday evenings traditionally). A $250 commitment fee is due at the team Orientation meeting after you have been selected to the team. 

In order to audition for the Spirit Squad, you must be either a current UC Irvine undergraduate student or a newly admitted/incoming freshmen or transfer student to UC Irvine. 

 

AUDITION OVERVIEW

Preparatory Audition Clinic

DATE: Saturday, May 20

TIME: 12:00-4:00pm

LOCATION: Crawford Court

Please plan on joining us for the preparatory audition clinic. Attendance is STRONGLY encouraged for anyone interested in auditioning. You will have the opportunity to meet the coach and learn material ahead of the audition. Clinic cost is $40 ($20 for returning squad members).

 

Download release liability waiver:

The liability release waiver must be completed and submitted on the day of the clinic AND auditions. If you are under 18 years of age, a parent of legal guardian must sign the waiver.

What should I wear to auditions?

2 piece attire

Top: Dance Bra top/sport bra top and shorts: black hot shorts (jazz pants are also acceptable)

Shoes: jazz shoes or athletic shoes

What does it take to be a member of the UC Irvine Dance Team?

Our judges will use the following selection criteria: dance technique, personal appearance, enthusiaSm, poise, showmanship, and personality. 

How should I wear my makeup?

Wear shades that compliment your natural beauty. Remember-we are a performance group and you must wear makeup that can be seen from a distance.

How should I wear my hair?

In a current hairstyle that compliments your features. The UC Irvine Dance team wears their hair DOWN unless specified by the head coach. 

Can my family watch the audition?

No, our tryouts are closed to the public.

Female:

2 piece attire in school colors (navy blue, gold/yellow)

Top: sport bra top or tank top

Bottoms: any kind of athletic shorts

Male:

Athletic shorts or pants and T-shirt

No Jewelry

Overall collegiate presentation

 

What does it take to be a member of the UC Irvine Cheer Squad?

Frequently Asked Questions:

Q: Do the Cheer and Dance Team participate in national competitions?

A: Both Cheer and Dance teams have participated in competitions in the past. The decision to compete will be decided upon by the team on a year to year basis.

Q: Does the program offer any scholarships?

A: No. At this time, UC Irvine does not offer scholarships opportunities for the Spirit Squad.

Q: What are the time commitments for being on the team?

A: Spirit Squad practices typically take place twice a week, on Sunday and Wednesday evenings, from 7:00-10:00PM. Members are required to make it to all practices, men's and women's basketball games, and may be asked to attend other athletics or community/campus events. Practices may also take place once a week during the summer. Winter quarter tends to be the busiest due to the heavy game and event load. 

Q: Can people come watch tryouts?

A: Tryouts will be closed to the public. Only the candidates, judges, and tryout assistants will be allowed in the gym. 

Q: Can I tryout by video if I live out of state?

A: While attendance at the physical tryout is preferred, you may tryout by video. Please e-mail the Head Coach, Lyndsie Olson, at lyndsieo@uci.edu for video tryout details. 

 

TEAM FINANCIAL OBLIGATIONS:

A uniform fee of $250 is required to obtain your game uniform for the 2017-18 season. The $250 includes shoes, warm-ups, and pom pons. There may also be a $50-$100 Summer camp fee, dependent on the 2017-2018 Spirit Squad projected budget. The uniform fee is due at the Team Orientation, date and time TBD.  No additional fees are required for membership, but there are many benefits and fun ahead!
