UC Irvine wins 'Black & Blue' Trophy for Second Straight Year

IRVINE, Calif. --- UC Irvine has claimed the "Black & Blue Series" trophy for the second consecutive year in its annual competition with Long Beach State.

The "Black & Blue Series," presented by Duke's of Huntington Beach, was created four years ago to build the rivalry between and UCI and Long Beach State in all common sports.

Each year at the conclusion of the final scheduled athletic event between the two institutions, the winner of that year's "Black & Blue Series" receives a surf board trophy bearing the inscription of the annual winners, provided by Duke's of Huntington Beach. The winning institution retains possession of the trophy for one year until the award presentation the following year.

The `Eaters claimed a 27-23 victory in 2008-09 with late-season wins over LBSU by men's golf, women's water polo and women's track and field sealing the win.

Victories recorded by UCI teams throughout the year included women's volleyball, men's water polo, women's cross country, men's volleyball (twice), women's basketball, baseball (three times), women's water polo (twice), men's golf and women's track and field.
