Former UC Irvine Athletes Compete At World University Games

World University Games Website Irvine, Calif. -- Former UC Irvine student-athletes Colin Mello, Cole Bitter and Nick Goldsborough-Reardon will compete at the 2009 World University Games held July 1-12 in Belgrade, Serbia. Mello, a former UCI All-American, is a member of the United States men’s water polo team, while Bitter, who was also an All-American for the Anteaters, is serving as an alternate. The U.S. will open up Group D competition on July 2 versus Japan then take on Poland on July 3 and Hungry on July 4. Competition continues with the finals ending on July 12. Goldsborough-Reardon, a setter on UCI’s 2009 National Championship team, will represent Australia in the men’s volleyball competition. Australia's first game in Group D will be on July 2 against United Arab Emirates, followed by a July 3 contest with Czech Republic and a July 4 match up with Germany. The Australians will battle Poland on July 6 and Hong Kong on the July 7 before quarterfinal play begins on July 9. About the Summer Universiade The Summer Universiade is an international multi-sport event that takes place every two years, and is second only to the Olympic Games in the number of participating athletes and countries. The Universiade is open to competitors between the ages of 17 and 28 in the year of the Games who are full-time students at a post-secondary institution (university, college, CEGEP) or have graduated from a post-secondary institution in the year preceding the event.
