Former UC Irvine All-American Nick Scandone Passes Away

Irvine, Calif. -- Former UC Irvine All-American sailor Nick Scandone passed away January 2 after a long battle with ALS.

 

Scandone, 42, won a gold medal with teammate Maureen McKinnon-Tucker in the SKUD-18 class at the 2008 Paralympic Sailing in Qingdao, China, this past summer.

 

Scandone was named US SAILING’s 2008 Sportsman of the Year and is nominated for US SAILING’s 2008 Rolex Yachtsman of the Year award. He was honored as the US SAILING’s Rolex Yachtsman of the Year Award in 2005.

 

At UCI, he was named an Intercollegiate Sailing Association All-American in 1988, helping the Anteaters win a national championship the same year.
