Position: Head Coach
Brian Pajer is in his seventh season as the men's and women's swimming & diving head coach of his alma mater. Pajer has been named Big West Coach of the Year three times in his first five seasons at UC Irvine, twice as the head of the women's team and once as the head of the men's team. The UCI women (2005) and the UCI men (2007) each have won the Big West Conference Championship under his guidance. The men's team has finished as high as 25th in the country at the NCAA Championships and the Anteater women have placed as high as 32nd at the NCAA's under Pajer. Pajer has had two All-Americans and eight Mid-Major All-Americans at UC Irvine. Pajer was the Big West Champion for UC Irvine in the 100 and 200 breaststroke all four years of his collegiate career as well as qualifing for both events at the NCAA Div I championships each year. In 1989 and 1990, Pajer was named to the NCAA All-American team. He was the Big West Athlete of the Year in 1987 and 1990, and still holds the Big West records in both breaststroke events. In addition to his athletic accomplishments at UCI, Pajer was a UCI Scholar-Athlete all four years, and the Big West Scholar-Athlete of the Year in 1987 and 1989. He majored in Physics, graduating from UCI in 1990. Additional swimming achievements include placing 13th in the 100 Breaststroke at the 1988 Olympic Trials, and seventh in the 100 and ninth in the 200 Breaststroke at the 1992 Olympic Trials. At the 1991 University Games in Sheffield, England, Pajer won two gold medals, in the 100 Breaststroke and on the Medley Relay. Along with his coaching duties for UCI Swimming & Diving, Pajer is the head coach for the Irvine Aquazot Swim Club, where he coaches the senior swimmers and 9-12 year-olds with AAA or better times. Kristen Caverly, a former Aquazot swimmer, competed in the 2004 Olympic Games for the United States. Prior to founding the Aquazots in April 1999, he was the Head Age Group Coach for several years at Irvine Novaquatics, where two of his swimmers during their developmental years were 1996, 2000, and 2004 Olympic medalist Amanda Beard, and 2004 gold medalist and current world record holder Aaron Peirsol. While at Novaquatics, Pajer was named Southern California Age Group Coach of the Year in 1994.
