UC Irvine Men and Women Move Up to Fourth At Big West Championships

LONG BEACH, Calif. - The UC Irvine men’s and women’s swimming & diving teams each moved up to fourth place after day two of the Big West Championships at Belmont Plaza Olympic Pool.
The Anteater men won the 400 medley relay with an NCAA ‘B’ cut time of 3:12.82. Senior Randall Tom (Wailuku, Hawaii/Seabury Hall), junior Chris Rosales (Diamond Bar/Valencia HS), senior Will Wollam (Riverside/Rubidoux HS) and sophomore Garrett Thompson (Stockton/Lincoln HS) were the four members of the relay. Randall Tom had UCI’s best individual finish of the day as he took second in the 200 IM with a ‘B’ cut time of 1:46.52. Both Tom and winner Scott Weltz of UC Davis swam faster than the previous meet record. Will Wollam took fourth in the 50 free with a time of 20.16. Freshman Julian Lawrence (La Cañada HS) had the ‘Eaters best finish in the 500 free (4:34.41) taking 11th place.
On the women’s side, UCI swept the top three places in the one-meter diving competition. Junior Melanie Grosvenor (Mission Viejo HS) was the winner with a score of 267.85. Freshmen Carissa Lewis (San Clemente HS) and Taylor Arth (San Clemente HS) took second and third with scores of 265.85 and 249.25 respectively. Sophomore Ann Tsuchiya (South Pasadena/Mayfield HS) finished sixth in the 500 free with a time of 5:00.72. Freshman Karissa Kruszewski (Murrieta/Vista Murrieta HS) was 14th in the 200 IM with a time of 2:07.56. Junior Jessica Schlitz (Turlock HS) was 16th in the 50 free with a time of 24.30. UCI concluded the night with a fifth place finish in the 400 medley relay (3:49.65).
The Big West Championships continue Friday with prelims at 10:30 a.m. at finals at 6:00 p.m. at Belmont Plaza Olympic Pool.
