UC Irvine Men Move to Third at Big West Championships; Women Fifth

LONG BEACH, Calif. - The UC Irvine men’s swimming & diving team moved up to third and the woemen are now fifth after day three of the Big West Championships at Belmont Plaza Olympic Pool.
Senior Randall Tom (Wailuku, Hawaii/Seabury Hall) won the 100 fly with an NCAA automatic qualifying time of 45.73. Tom’s Big West and UC Irvine record time is the fifth fastest in the country this season. Junior Chris Rosales (Diamond Bar/Valencia HS) touched the wall at the exact same moment as Jeff Sudbury of UC Santa Barbara to tie for Big West title in the 100 breast with a time of 54.76. Sophomore diver Miles Smith (Carmichael/Capital Christian HS) won the three-meter diving competition with a score of 318.15.
Senior Will Wollam (Riverside/Rubidoux HS) took third in the 100 fly with a time of 47.79. Freshman Jowan Qupty (Jerusalem, Israel) started the night off with a fifth place finish in the 400 IM (3:56.56). Sophomore Garrett Thompson (Stockton/Lincoln HS) took fourth in the 200 free with a time of 1:38.09. Freshman Avelino Enriquez (Pasadena/La Salle HS) finished eighth in the 100 back with a time of 51.33. Junior diver Eric Nugent (Whittier/La Serna HS) took third in the three-meter competition with a score of 293.50.
On the women’s side, junior Jessica Schlitz (Turlock HS) took fourth in the 100 fly with a time of 54.83. Sophomore Ann Tsuchiya (South Pasadena/Mayfield HS) finished ninth in the 200 fly (1:51.87). Sophomore Stephanie Gabert (Newport Beach/Arizona) finished ninth in the 100 breast with a time of 1:05.37. Freshman Michelle Teets (Austin, Texas) took fourth in the 100 back with her time of 56.30.
The Big West Championships conclude Saturday with prelims at 10:30 a.m. at finals at 6:00 p.m. at Belmont Plaza Olympic Pool.
