Anteaters at Cal State Northridge, UC Davis Next Week

ANTEATERS OFF THIS WEEK: The UC Irvine men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams will be off from competition this week. They will return next week as they go on the road for a pair of Big West dual meets. They face Cal State Northridge Friday, February 6th at 12:00 p.m. at Matador Pool. They then travel to Davis to take on UC Davis Saturday, February 7th at 12:00 p.m. at Schaal Aquatics Center.
WEEK IN REVIEW: The ‘Eater men swept UC San Diego and Cal Baptist while the Anteater women defeated Cal Baptist and lost to UC San Diego last week in dual meet action. Senior Randall Tom (Wailuku, Hawaii/Seabury Hall) won the 200 fly (1:49.69), the 100 fly (48.24) and swam for both of UCI’s winning relays. Sophomore Ann Tsuchiya (South Pasadena/Mayfield HS) won the 1000 free (10:32.27), the 200 free (1:54.42) and the 500 free (5:06.76). Junior diver Melanie Grosvenor (Mission Viejo HS) won both the three-meter (287.15) and the one-meter (272.35) competitions qualifying for the NCAA Zone ‘E’ Diving Regionals.
TOM LEADING THE WAY: Randall Tom has NCAA ‘B’ cut times in the 100 fly (46.48), the 200 fly (1:44.57) and the 100 breast (54.71).
Tom was named Big West Swimmer of the Week November 25th. This was the sixth time he has won the award in his career.
TOP RETURNERS: Randall Tom returns for UCI after redshirting last season. Tom was the 2007 Big West Athlete of the Year and finished ninth in the 100 fly at the 2007 NCAA Championships. Junior Nate Rogers (Albuquerque, N.M./California), sophomore Garrett Thompson (Stockton/Lincoln HS) and senior Will Wollam (Riverside/Rubidoux HS) each were All-Big West in ’08 as members of the champion 400 free relay team. The ‘Eater men also return sophomore diver Miles Smith who won both Big West diving titles as a freshman in 2008.
On the women’s side, Ann Tsuchiya a member of the 2008 Big West champion 800 free relay team. She also earned All-Big West honors in the 1000 free, 500 free and 1650 free. Senior diver Rachel Pearson (Van Nuys/Taft HS) was All-Big West in one-meter diving in 2008.
