ANTEATERS HOST NIKE CUP: The UC Irvine men’s and women’s swimming teams will host the 2008 Nike Cup Thursday through Saturday at Belmont Plaza Olympic Pool in Long Beach. Prelims begin at 9:00 a.m. each day with finals at 6:00 p.m. at Belmont. A total of 22 women’s teams and 15 men’s teams will be competing at the three day event.


NIKE CUP PREVIEW: The Nike Cup will feature 13 Division I women’s teams and seven Division men’s teams. Highlighting the men’s competition is Brigham Young who finished second in the 2007 Nike Cup and Air Force who finished third. On the women’s side, BYU is the top women’s team after finishing second at the 2007 event. Pacific took third last year on the women’s side.

The Division I women’s field is UC Irvine, BYU, Air Force, Loyola Marymount, Nevada, New Mexico, Cal State Northridge, Pepperdine, Pacific, San Jose State, San Diego, Cal State Bakersfield and UNLV. On the men’s side, UC Irvine, Air Force, BYU, UNLV, Cal State Northridge, Cal State Bakersfield and Pacific.   


 

 


TOP RETURNERS: The Anteater teams each have a former Big West Athlete of the Year returning this season. Junior Lyndsay DePaul (Orange/Villa Park HS) returns for the women’s side after her second straight trip to the NCAA Championships. Senior
Randall Tom (Wailuku, Hawaii/Seabury Hall) returns after redshirting last season. Tom was the 2007 Big West Athlete of the Year and finished ninth in the 100 fly at the 2007 NCAA Championships. The ‘Eater men also return sophomore diver Miles Smith (Carmichael/Capital Christian HS) who won both Big West diving titles as a freshman in 2008.
