UCI's Lauren Collins Leads Big West Heptathlon After First Day

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. --- UC Irvine sophomore Lauren Collins leads the Big West Conference Heptathlon after Saturday's four events at Cal State Northridge. The final three events will be contested Sunday.

Collins scored 3,389 points Saturday, followed by Brittany Ricketts of Cal State Northridge with 3,245 and Cal Poly's Sharon Day with 3,201 in the 11-athlete field.

Collins had marks Saturday of 13.98 in the 100-meter hurdles, 5-10 in the high jump, 34-0 in the shot put and 24.84 in the 200 meters. Her hurdles' time of 13.98 is a new school record as she now holds three UCI marks. Earlier this season, she established school records in the heptathlon (5,446 points) and the high jump (5-11 1/4).

In the Big West Decathlon at Northridge, UCI's Shawn Maghzi is fourth with 3,393 points after the first day. Robert Robinson of Northridge leads at 3,652, Cal Poly's James Nunno has 3,515 points and Jeremy Vuksonovich of Cal Poly has 3,447. UCI's Kirk Marciel is seventh with 3,295, Eric Nyberg is eighth with 3,186 and James Lehigh is 11th at 3,048.

Maghzi had marks Saturday of 11.35 in the 100 meters, 21-5 1/4 in the long jump, 34-10 1/4 in the shot put, 5-10 3/4 in the high jump and 51.32 in the 400 meters.

Marciel had marks of 11.50 in the 100 meters, 20-7 1/4 in the long jump, 38-1 1/2 in the shot put, 6-3 1/2 in the high jump and 55.48 in the 400 meters. Nyberg's marks were 11.69 in the 100, 22-1 in the long jump, 34-7 1/2 in the shot put, 6-0 in the high jump and 56.22 in the 400. Lehigh's marks were 11.95 in the 100, 20-7 1/4 in the long jump, 36-2 1/4 in the shot put, 6-3 1/2 in the high jump and 58.65 in the 400.
