UCI Turns in Strong Performances at Big West Championships

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. --- UC Irvine senior Ricky Barnes turned in strong performances Saturday as the Big West Conference Track & Field Championships concluded at Cal State Northridge's Matador Track Complex.

Barnes finished second in the 1500 meters with a time of 3:42.57 for the No. 2 time in UCI history. He also was runner-up in the 800 meters in 1:50.93.

Freshman Napoleon Greene finished second in the 400-meter hurdles in 52.42 after running an NCAA regional-qualifying time of 52.30 in Friday's prelims for the seventh-fastest time in Anteater history. Greene placed fifth in the 110-meter hurdles in 15.15.

Sophomore Oliver Plattner finished third in the 400 meters with a time of 47.53, the No. 9 time in the UCI record book, and he placed fifth in the 200 meters in 21.70. Senior Peter Gonzalez was sixth in the triple jump with a mark of 47-10.

The men's 4x100 relay of Matt Linder, George Hernandez, Mark Ilarina and Gerald Hinkle finished second in 41.00. The 4x400 relay of Storm Huie, Tim Murphy, Hernandez and Plattner was fifth in 3:13.66.

The Anteater men's team finished sixth with 96 points as Cal State Northridge won the title with 165.

For the women, sophomore Lauren Collins finished second in the high jump at 5-11 1/4, tying her school record that she set earlier this season. Collins finished fourth in the 100-meter hurdles in 13.96 as she improved on her school-record time.

Freshman Alisha Misiata set the school record in the shot put as she placed fourth with a mark of 47-10. She broke Laura Mills' record of 47-8 set in 1986. Misiata finished seventh in the discus throw at 141-1 and freshman Amber Sangster was eighth with a mark of 140-6.

Junior Candice Proctor finished seventh in the 5,000 meters (17:35.38), junior Sara Mickelson was eighth (17:43.73) and junior Laura Olvera ninth (17:50.76).

Junior Elaine Gillespie finished eighth in the 1500 meters (4:42.49) while the 4x100 relay of Kristen Silverman, Sharitie Williams, Orlisha Henlon and Nicole Dickerson finished fourth in 47.95. The 4x400 relay of Henlon, Collins, Samantha Costantini and Dickerson finished sixth in 3:49.42.

The UCI women's squad finished seventh with 59 points as host Northridge was first with 174.
