April 25, 2007

STEVE SCOTT INVITATIONAL THIS WEEKEND: UCI hosts the Asics/Steve Scott Invitational at Anteater Stadium Friday and Saturday (Apr. 27-28).

Competition on Friday will include the men's and women's hammer throw, the men's and women's javelin throw, and the men's and women's long jump.

All track events and the remaining field events will be contested on Saturday. Field events will begin at 10:00 a.m. with the first track event scheduled to start at 11:00 a.m.

MILE, NOT 1500 METERS: At the Asics/Steve Scott Invitational, the men will compete in the true mile run, not the 1,500 meters. The change is in celebration of Scott's American record in the mile that he set in 1982. He is a 1978 graduate of UCI and a three-time Olympian. Scott is head coach at Cal State San Marcos.

QUINTET TO COMPETE IN STANFORD: Five UCI student-athletes are scheduled to compete in the Payton Jordan Cardinal Information at Stanford Sunday in attempts to post NCAA regional-qualifying marks. Juniors Sara Mickelson, Laura Olvera and Candice Proctor will run the 5,000 meters while juniors Tim Hearst and Sky Johnston will compete in the 3,000-meter steeplechase.

THROWERS QUALIFY FOR BIG WEST: Three UCI throwers posted Big West-qualifying marks at the Triton Invitational in La Jolla this past Saturday. For the men, sophomore Kelley Hall and freshman Jimmy Kearney qualified for the conference meet in the discus throw with marks of 147-11 and 147-2, respectively. On the women's side, freshman Amber Sangster also qualified for the league meet in the discus throw with a mark of 144-9, which ranks No. 7 in UCI history.
