Five UCI Competitors at Big West Multi-Event Championships

BIG WEST MULTI-EVENTS AT CSUN: UCI has five representatives competing in the Big West Conference Multi-Event Championships Saturday and Sunday (May 5-6) at Cal State Northridge.

Sophomore Lauren Collins, the school-record holder with 5,446 points, will compete in the heptathlon. Her total ranks 13th in the nation this season.

Shawn Maghzi, Eric Nyberg, James Lehigh and Kirk Marciel will represent UCI in the decathlon this weekend. Maghzi has a previous total of 6,357 points this season and Nyberg 6,349.

The decathlon starts at 12:00 p.m. and the heptathlon at 12:30 p.m. Saturday. On Sunday, the decathlon begins at 11:00 a.m. with the heptathlon starting at 1:00 p.m.

The Big West Track and Field Championships will also be in Northridge May 11-12.

JOHNSTON, HEARST QUALIFY FOR NCAA REGIONAL IN STEEPLECHASE: Juniors Sky Johnston and Tim Hearst posted NCAA regional-qualifying times in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the Payton Jordan Cardinal Invitational hosted by Stanford Sunday night. Johnston ran 9:02.47 and Hearst 9:07.00, which is right on the qualifying mark.

In the women's 5,000 meters, UCI's Candice Proctor had a time of 17:01.01, Laura Olvera 17:07.56 and Sara Mickelson 17:33.41.

BARNES, MOSEY WIN EVENTS AT ASICS/STEVE SCOTT INVITATIONAL; COLLINS POSTS NO. 2 TIME IN SCHOOL HISTORY IN 100 HURDLES: Senior Ricky Barnes won the 800 meters with a time of 1:51.35 in the Asics/Steve Scott Invitational at Anteater Stadium Saturday. Freshman teammate Tim Murphy placed fourth in 1:53.50. Nick Mosey won the 5,000 meters in 15:03.61.

Sophomore Lauren Collins recorded the No. 2 time in UCI history in the 100-meter hurdles with a mark of 14.15 to win her section. She placed second in the high jump at 5-7.

Nicole Dickerson and Lauren Willis qualified for the Big West Championships in the 100 meters with times of 12.32 and 12.39, respectively. Samantha Costantini finished second in the 1,500 meters (4:37.00) and she was seventh in the 800 meters (2:16.67).

Alisha Misiata was third in the shot put at 46-8 ¼ while Sarah Lady had a Big West-qualifying mark of 141-3 in the discus throw.

In other men's action, UCI's Napolean Greene (15.12) and Kevin Palmer (15.23) recorded Big West-qualifying times in the 110-meter hurdles. Mike Navarro finished fourth in the long jump (22-7) to qualify for the Big West meet. Julian Eison placed fourth in the high jump at 6-8 ¾ and Eric Nyberg was fifth in the javelin throw at 183-7. Jimmy Kearney had a Big West-qualifying mark of 161-10 in the hammer throw.

In celebration of Steve Scott's 25-year-old American record in the mile, the men competed in the mile run, not the regular 1,500 meters Saturday. Jonah Maiyo of Runners Paradise was the winner in 4:07.99.
