Big West Championships This Weekend

BIG WEST CHAMPIONSHIPS AT CSUN: The Big West Conference Track & Field Championships will be contested Friday and Saturday (May 11-12) at Cal State Northridge's Matador Track Complex.
Friday's schedule has the first field event at 9:00 a.m. and the initial track event at 2:30 p.m. On Saturday, field events begin at 12:00 p.m. with track events starting at 3:00 p.m.
COLLINS WINS BIG WEST HEPTATHLON: Sophomore Lauren Collins won the Big West Conference Heptathlon that concluded Sunday with a school-record total of 5,512 points at Cal State Northridge.
She broke her own school record of 5,446 set earlier this season and reached the NCAA automatic-qualifying standard of 5,500 points. The NCAA Championships are in Sacramento June 6-9.
Collins' marks Sunday were 18-0 ½ in the long jump, 118-3 in the javelin throw and 2:19.41 in the 800 meters. She had a school-record time of 13.98 in the 100-meter hurdles Saturday.
Cal Poly's Sharon Day finished second with 5,244 points and Brittany Ricketts of Cal State Northridge was third with 5,151.
In the Big West Decathlon that also concluded Sunday, UCI's Shawn Maghzi finished third with 6,436 points. Cal Poly's James Nunno won the competition with 6,772 points and Robert Robinson of Northridge was second with 6 ,656.
Maghzi had marks Sunday of 16.13 in the 110-meter hurdles, 103-2 in the discus throw, 13-3 ½ in the pole vault, 127-2 in the javelin throw and 4:25.17 in the 1,500 meters.
UCI's Kirk Marciel was seventh with 5,883 points, Eric Nyberg finished ninth with 5,663 and James Lehigh was 10th with 5,653.
BIG WEST QUALIFIERS AT CLAREMONT: UCI had several athletes post Big West-qualifying marks at the Claremont Classic over the weekend.
Sharitie Williams ran 12.33 in the 100 meters to qualify for this weekend's conference meet as did Gerald Hinkle with a time of 10.86.
Colin Hacker qualified in the 1,500 meters (3:56.55) and Matt Berg in the 400-meter hurdles (55.55).
