UC Irvine Competes at Big West Championships This Weekend

NORTHRIDGE HOSTS LEAGUE MEET: The UC Irvine track and field teams compete in the 2008 Big West Conference Championships this weekend at Cal State Northridge's Matador Track Complex. Field events begin at 9:00 a.m. Friday (May 16) with the first track event at 9:30 a.m. as both steeplechase races have been moved to the morning. Saturday's schedule has the first field event at 12:00 p.m. with the first event on the track at 3:00 p.m. The Anteaters have a total of 72 individual qualifiers for the conference meet (40 men, 32 women). Top returning UCI performers from last year's Big West meet include Napoleon Greene, who placed second in the 400-meter hurdles and Oliver Plattner, who was third in the 400 meters and Tim Hearst, who was third in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. Dayne Comrie, who was a redshirt last year, finished second in the 400 meters at the 2006 conference meet. Kendall Bruton placed third in last year's steeplechase and Alisha Misiaita was fourth in the shot put. The UCI men's squad placed sixth a year ago and the women's team finished seventh. Cal State Northridge has won the last two women's titles and the Matadors also won last year's men's championship. PETERSON FINISHES 4TH IN BIG WEST DECATHLON: Junior Kyle Peterson finished fourth in the decathlon at the Big West Conference Multi-Event Championships that concluded last Saturday at Cal State Northridge's Matador Track Complex.
Peterson finished with a total of 6,387 points over the two days of competition. UCI's Trent Richert placed sixth with 6,241 points and Eric Nyberg was eighth with 6,111. Long Beach State's Chris Richardson won the decathlon with 7,461 points. LAHTI QUALIFIES FOR REGIONAL: UCI sophomore Matt Lahti recorded a mark of 192-3 in the hammer throw at last Saturday's Oxy Invitational to qualify for the NCAA West Regional. That mark ranks fourth in UCI history. Kelley Hall posted a Big West-qualifying mark of 166-6 in the hammer to rank No. 7 all-time at UCI.
