UC Irvine Women's Team Wins Asics/UCI Invitational

IRVINE, Calif. --- The UC Irvine women's cross country team opened the 2007 season by winning the title of the Asics / UCI Invitational Saturday at the Anteater Recreation Center Fields. UCI finished with 41 points, Loyola Marymount was second with 82 and Cal Poly third with 84. Anteater junior Laura Olvera finished second of 123 runners with a time of 17:51.50 over 5,000 meters. Candice Proctor was fourth (18:02.20), Samantha Costantini sixth (18:14.50) and Sara Mickelson placed 13th (18:32.90). Amber Gordon finished 16th in 18:45.20, Kendall Bruton was 20th (18:54.60) and Katherine Nielsen 22nd (18:55.60) to round out UCI's top seven. Laura Mickelson of Loyola Marymount was the individual champion with a time of 17:27.70. The UCI men's team finished eighth with 206 points as Cal Poly was first with 39, Southern Utah second (101) and Loyola Marymount third (119). UCI's Colin Hacker finished 15th of 195 runners with a time of 25:08.40 over 8,000 meters. Sky Johnston was 23rd (25:33.40), Rusty Whisman 48th (26:20.20) and Adrian Doty placed 67th (26:47.30). Brian Brierly finished 68th (26:48.70), Aman Bhatia 71st (26:49.40) and George Morris 78th (26:56.20) to complete the Anteaters' top seven runners. Cal Poly's Evan Anderson won the race in 24:34.10.
