Anteater Men Finish 4th in Asics/UCI Invitational

IRVINE, Calif. --- The UC Irvine men's cross country team finished fourth and the women's squad ninth in the Asics/UCI Invitational Saturday at the Anteater Recreation Center Field. Sophomore Rex Nelson paced the Anteater men with a fourth-place showing in the 213-runner field with a time of 25:23.80 over 8,000 meters. Muluken Baressa of Cal State San Marcos was the individual winner in 25:06.10. UCI's Victor Bonilla finished 20th (25:47.80), Sam Hyams was 39th (26:14.10) and Brett Matejka 48th (26:27.20). Andy Burich in 56th place (26:39.40), Austin Williams 60th (26:44.20) and Brett Schmitt 61st (26:45.20) rounded out the Anteaters' top seven. Chico State won the 21-team race with 36 points, Cal Poly was second at 65, Fresno State third with 110 and UCI placed fourth with 125 points. Redshirt freshman Melissa Mead led the Anteater women's team with a 19th-place finish of 18:19.90 over the 5,000-meter course. Dallon Williams of Cal State San Marcos was first with a time of 17:21.70 in the 149-runner field. Nicole Mendoza of UCI was 28th (18:40.90), Chloe Fata 57th (19:09.20) and Carlotta Pham 62nd (19:13.50). Completing the Anteaters' top seven were Shelly Foerster in 68th place (19:18.50), Jessica Vaughan 72nd (19:25.70) and Maggie Newton-Neal 82nd (19:32.80). Cal Poly was the women's team champion with 74 points, Chico State finished second with 84 and Cal State San Marcos third with 121. UCI had 215 points for ninth place.
