UCI Men's, Women's Teams Win Titles at Pomona-Pitzer

CLAREMONT, Calif. --- The UC Irvine men's and women's cross country teams each won the titles of the Pomona-Pitzer Invitational Saturday.
UCI's men had five runners finish in the top nine spots, led by sophomore Rex Nelson, who won the 8,000-meter race in 25:32.37.
Brett Matejka was fourth (25:45.49), Sam Hyams fifth (25:59.33), Victor Bonilla seventh (26:06.53) and Barrett Tilley ninth (26:09.69) in the 110-runner field. Austin Williams in 11th place (26:20.84) and Eric Hansen in 12th (26:29.39) rounded out the `Eaters' top seven.
UCI finished with 24 points in the 11-team race, Pomona-Pitzer was second with 52 and Occidental College third with 115.
The Anteater women's team, with five runners in the first eight, won the 10-team competition with 25 points. Occidental was second with 68 and UC Santa Cruz third with 94.
Mikayla Murphy of UC Santa Cruz was the individual winner with a time of 22:41.05 over 6,000 meters.
UCI's Melissa Mead placed second in 22:51.19, Chloe Fata was fourth (23:18.01), Shelby Pock fifth (23:19.80), Nicole Mendoza sixth (23:33.19) and Courtney Wilson eighth (23:44.55) in the 117-runner field. Completing UCI's top seven were Shelley Foerster in 12th place (23:58.37) and Maggie Newton-Neal in 16th (24:19.61).
Both Anteater teams return to action next Saturday (Oct. 10) in the UCSD Triton Classic at La Jolla.
