UCI Men's Team Wins Cal Poly Invitational Title

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. --- The UC Irvine men's cross country team captured the title of the Cal Poly Invitational Saturday on the Fairbanks Memorial Cross Country Course at Cuesta College.

The Anteaters scored 29 points, Cal Poly was second with 39 and UCLA third with 60.

UCI sophomore Rex Nelson finished third on the 8,000-meter course with a time of 27:05.6. Philip Reid of the Cal Poly Alumni won the race in 26:42.1 and Derek Thomas from Cal Poly was second in 26:54.1.

The Anteaters' Victor Bonilla placed sixth in 27:19.5, Brett Matejka was 10th (27:54.3) and Sam Hyams 12th in 28:00.0.

Rounding out UCI's top seven were Barrett Tilley in 14th place (28:05.9), Austin Williams 18th (28:14.5) and Eric Hansen 19th (28:16.0).

The UCI women's team finished third with 68 points as UCLA won the title with 31 and Cal Poly was second with 37.

UCLA's Shannon Murakami was the individual winner with a time of 18:01.0 over 5,000 meters.

UCI redshirt freshman Chloe Fata placed ninth in 18:54.3, Melissa Mead was 12th (19:04.6), Shelby Pock 16th (19:20.6) and Katherine Nielsen 17th (19:22.2).

Nicole Mendoza finished 23rd in 19:48.0, Shelley Foerster was 24th (19:57.9) and Carlotta Pham 25th (19:59.3) to complete the Anteaters' top seven.
