RIVERSIDE, Calif. --- The UC Irvine men's cross country team finished sixth and the women's squad eighth in the Big West Conference Championships at Riverside Saturday.

Cal Poly won the men's title with 28 points, UC Santa Barbara was second with 67 and UC Davis third with 81. UCI scored 143 points.

Joe Gatel of Cal Poly was the individual winner with a time of 23:36.8 on the 8,000-meter course at the UCR Agricultural Operations Course.

UCI's Sam Hyams placed 24th in 25:02.0, Rex Nelson was 28th (25:14.0), Brett Matejka 32nd (25:22.4) and Austin Williams 33rd (25:22.6).

Rounding out the Anteaters' lineup were Victor Bonilla in 36th place (25:29.1), Barrett Tilley 41st (25:36.5), Andy Burich 45th (25:50.9), Brett Schmitt 55th (26:35.8) and Eric Hansen 59th (27:18.0).

UC Santa Barbara won the women's championship with 50 points, UC Davis was second with 61 and Cal Poly third with 74. UCI was eighth with 204 points.

Sarah Sumpter of UC Davis won the 6,000-meter race with a time of 20:34.0.

Melissa Mead led UCI with a 28th-place finish of 21:48.4, Shelby Pock was 39th (22:14.1) and Chloe Fata 43rd (22:25.0).


 

 

Completing the team's lineup were Nicole Mendoza in 51st place (22:50.7), Katherine Nielsen 58th (23:15.0), Carlotta Pham 61st (23:28.5), Shelley Foerster 64th (23:41.8), Maggie Newton-Neal 68th (24:28.3) and Jessica Vaughan 72nd (26:08.0).
