UC Irvine Women's Team Finishes 2nd at Big West Championships
Nov. 1, 2008 RIVERSIDE, Calif. --- The UC Irvine women's cross country team finished second in a close race at the Big West Conference Championships Saturday at UC Riverside's Agricultural Operations Course. UC Riverside won its first Big West women's cross country title with 60 points, UCI followed with 69 and UC Davis was third with 81. Danielle Domenichelli of UC Santa Barbara was the individual champion with a time of 20:09.40 over the 6,000-meter course. UC Irvine senior Laura Olvera was runner-up with a time of 20:12.50 as she finished in the league's top three each of her four years. UCI's Candice Chavez was fifth in 20:27.40 as she earned all-conference honors for the second consecutive season. Gabriela Santana placed 16th (21:14.90), Samantha Costantini was 18th (21:19.50) and Lauren Chramosta 28th (21:41.80) to complete the Anteaters' scoring five. Kendall Bruton finished 29th (21:45.10), Emily Romo 36th (22:05.00), Erinn Kim 38th (22:11.10) and Megan Fairley 39th (22:16.40). The Cal Poly men's team won its sixth straight Big West title with 19 points, UC Davis finished second with 71 and UC Riverside third with 73 as UCI placed sixth with 162 points. Daniel Gonia of Cal Poly won the 8,000-meter race with a time of 24:02.4 and teammate Evan Anderson was second in 24:15.6. Senior Nick Mosey was UCI's top runner with a 20th-place time of 25:11.1. Freshman Rex Nelson finished 24th in 25:20.8, Danny Kalinowski was 41st (26:01.7), Nick Osborne 44th (26:17.5) and Victor Bonilla 48th (26:28.6) to round out UCI's top five.
Sam Hyams placed 50th (26:37.0), Chris Proffitt 52nd (26:42.2), Rusty Whisman 54th (26:51.8) and Colin Hacker 59th (27:16.0). Both UCI teams compete in the NCAA West Regional at Stanford Nov. 15. |
