UCI RUNS AT STANFORD SATURDAY: The UC Irvine men's and women's cross country teams return to competitive action Saturday (Sept. 27) for the first time in three weeks at the 35th Stanford Invitational.

The men's 8,000-meter race is scheduled to begin at 10:50 a.m. with the women's 6,000 meters at 11:30 a.m.

The UCI women's team placed third at the meet a year ago and the men's squad was 17th.

MOSEY NAMED ATHLETE OF WEEK: Senior Nick Mosey (Yorba Linda/Servite HS) was named the Big West Conference male Athlete of the Week Sept. 17.

Mosey placed first of 135 runners in the Asics/UCI Invitational Sept. 6 with a time of 25:14.30 over 8,000 meters. The win was his first collegiate title. UCI finished second in the team competition.

ANTEATER WOMEN WIN HOME MEET: The UCI women's team, led by senior Laura Olvera's first-place finish, won the title of the Asics/UCI Invitational for the second straight year at the Anteater Recreation Center Fields Sept. 6.

UCI, in its season opener, finished with 51 points, followed by UCLA (84) and Loyola Marymount (109) in the 14-team race.

Olvera (Whittier HS) covered the 5,000-meter course in 17:24.00 as she won her first individual collegiate title. Senior teammate Candice Chavez (Esperanza HS) placed third in 17:43.80 as Tara Erdmann of Loyola Marymount was second in 17:36.60.

A trio of seniors rounded out UCI's top five as Samantha Costantini (Mater Dei HS) was sixth (17:53.90), Erinn Kim (Milpitas HS) 19th (18:37.60) and Lauren Chramosta (Crescenta Valley HS) 22nd (18:42.20).

Sophomore Katherine Nielsen (Irvine HS) placed 24th (18:44.50), senior Kendall Bruton (Running Springs/Rim of the World HS) was 37th (19:00.80), junior Emily Romo (Felton/San Lorenzo Valley HS) 42nd (19:04.60) and senior Megan Fairley (Riverside/King HS) 46th (19:07.50) in the 155-runner field.

 

 

MOSEY WINS MEN'S TITLE AS UCI PLACES 2ND: Nick Mosey and junior Colin Hacker (Lompoc/Cabrillo HS) of UCI finished 1-2 in the men's race at the Asics/UCI Invitational. Mosey recorded a time of 25:14.30 and Hacker 25:21.50 over the 8,000-meter course. It was Mosey's first individual title in the collegiate ranks.

Senior Rusty Whisman (Crescenta Valley HS) placed 12th in 25:53.90, freshman Rex Nelson (Newport Harbor HS) was 19th (26:07.50) while freshmen Chris Proffitt (Santa Cruz/San Lorenzo Valley HS) and Danny Kalinowski (Mira Costa HS) were 35th and 36th, respectively in 26:37.90 and 26:40.80.

Senior Solomon Tesfaye (Rancho Cucamonga/Los Osos HS) finished 50th in 27:11.90, freshman Nick Osborne (Apple Valley/Victor Valley Christian HS) was 54th (27:16.40) and sophomore Victor Bonilla (Whittier/St. John Bosco HS) 57th (27:23.00) in the 135-runner field.

UCLA won the men's team title with 29 points, UCI was second with 61 and Cal Poly third with 70.
