UC Irvine Men's Team Competes at Pepperdine Invitational Saturday

UCI RUNS IN MALIBU SATURDAY: UC Irvine will field a men's team in the Pepperdine Invitational Saturday (Oct. 4) at Alumni Park on the campus in Malibu with the 8,000-meter race scheduled to begin at noon. Laura Olvera WINS RACE AT STANFORD: UC Irvine senior Laura Olvera won the women's 6,000-meter race with a time of 20:42 at the 35th Stanford Cross Country Invitational Saturday. She finished eight seconds ahead of runner-up Jacky Kipwambok (20:50) of Azusa Pacific in the race that included 278 runners at the Stanford University Golf Course. It was the second consecutive individual title for Olvera, who won the Asics/UCI Invitational Sept. 6. The Anteater women finished sixth of 33 teams with 227 points as Stanford was first with 43. UCI's Candice Chavez finished 11th in the 278-runner field with a time of 21:30. Samantha Costantini was 63rd (22:59), Emily Romo was 80th (23:08) and Kendall Bruton 81st (23:09). Gabriela Santana placed 84th in 23:12 and Megan Fairley 123rd (23:38) to complete UCI's top seven runners. In the men's competition, UCI finished eighth of 28 teams with 249 points as Stanford successfully defended its title with 39 points. Chico State's Scott Bauhs won the 8,000-meter race with a time of 23:45. Anteater senior Nick Mosey placed 21st of 234 runners in 25:10, Colin Hacker was 29th (25:23), Rusty Whisman 67th (26:06) and Rex Nelson 68th (26:07).
Chris Proffitt in 94th place (26:32), Nick Osborne 108th (26:44) and Danny Kalinowski 118th (26:51) rounded out UCI's top seven. |
