Anteaters Tame Jaguars; Hooper, Hoover Combine For Six Scoreless
HOUSTON, Tex., --- UC Irvine gave up one run in the first and then quieted Southern the rest of the way as the Anteater pitching staff logged eight scoreless innings in a 5-1 win Saturday in the MLB Urban Invitational at Minute Maid Park.
Kyle Hooper (1-0) pitched four shutout innings, striking out two and yielding one hit in relief before handing the ball off to Nick Hoover, who retired six straight to close out the game. Junior Matt Whitehouse fanned six in a three-inning start and allowed a run to cross the plate in the first.
The Jaguars managed an early run, getting a two-out RBI double off the bat of Stephen Wallace to score Taylor Roy for the team's lone run.
Reyes answered with his own two-out hit, lining a single to right to drive in Connor Spencer, who had singled and took second on a hit from Kris Paulino. In a double-steal attempt with Reyes and Paulino, Southern catcher Clint Ourso threw down to third behind Paulino. However, the throw got away from Cameron McGriff, allowing the left-fielder to score the eventual game-winning run.
Walks proved to be costly for the Jaguars in the eighth as Paulino and Reyes each drew a base on balls. Ramirez capitalized with a hard single past the diving McGriff to score Paulino and cap the scoring for UCI.
Due to inclement weather, Sunday's game against Texas Southern will be played at Minute Maid Park with first pitch now starting at 8:00 a.m. (PT).
