Anteaters Blanked By Huskies In Series Opener
IRVINE, Calif. --- UC Irvine was unable to overcome an early three-run lead by Washington as the Anteaters suffered a 3-0 loss to the Huskies Friday at Cicerone Field at Anteater Ballpark.
Designated hitter Robert Pehl hit a hard shot off the out-stretched glove of Fox to lead off the Husky second with a single. A wild pitch put Pehl in scoring position for Michael Camporeale, who drove a 1-1 pitch just inside the third-base line for an RBI double. Erik Forgione followed by dunking a two-out hit to right to give Washington a 2-0 lead.
The Huskies struck again in the third, putting runners on first and third with two outs for Jacob Lamb, who dribbled a ball up the third base line for an infield single to score Branden Berry.
UCI's only threat came in the sixth on back-to-back two-out singles from Crumlich and Fox but a grounder to Berry at first would end the inning.
Matt Whitehouse took the loss (0-1) after striking out six in five innings and giving up three runs on eight hits. Kyle Hooper also struck out six batters, including the side in the ninth, while limiting Washington to two hits in the final four frames.
Aaron West collected his first win after six innings of three-hit baseball. Joshua Fredendell pitched a perfect ninth to register his second save. Pehl and Forgione combined for six of the team's 10 hits.
The series continues Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
