WACO, Tex. --- Crosby Slaught and Phil Ferragamo teamed up to hold Lamar to one run and lead UC Irvine to a 4-1 win Sunday to conclude the weekend at the QTI Baylor Invitational.
The win lifted UCI to one game above .500 at 6-5 while Lamar dropped to 3-6. Slaught gave up three hits in a five-inning start while walking three and fanning three for his first win of the season (1-2). Ferragamo picked up for Slaught in the sixth and struck out three in four shutout innings to collect his first save.
UCI, the designated home team, gave Slaught early run support, putting runners on first and third in the bottom of the first on a pair of leadoff hits from D.J. Crumlich and Christian Ramirez. Connor Spencer's infield single scored Crumlich to put the Anteaters on the board and following a walk issued to Tommy Reyes, starter Colin Chapman was called for a balk, allowing Ramirez to score for the 2-0 lead.
Spencer and Scott Gottschling sandwiched an out with a pair of hits in the bottom of the third and Kris Paulino drove a 2-2 pitch to the right-field wall for a two-run double, giving the Anteaters a 4-0 advantage and chasing Chapman from the game.
Lamar avoided the shutout in the top of the fourth on a sacrifice fly from Brad Picha to score Jeff Abt, who had singled to lead off the frame.
The Cardinals threatened in the ninth, getting a one-out single to center from Picha, who was followed by Cameron Campbell's infield single to put runners on first and second with two outs. However, Ferragamo induced a fly-ball out to center for the final out.
Paulino led UCI with two RBI while Spencer drove in a run on two hits.
