Anteaters Put Red Light On Big Green In Ninth To Win Series
IRVINE, Calif. --- A day after recording a walk-off win in the ninth, UC Irvine had to hold off rallying Dartmouth as the Anteaters went on to post their second 5-4 win over the Big Green Friday at Cicerone Field at Anteater Ballpark.
UCI led 5-3 after eight but Ennis Coble tripled to lead off the Dartmouth ninth and scored on an RBI groundout to second by pinch-hitter Thomas Roulis to come to within a run. David Turnbull's infield single to third put the tying run at first with two outs but Dillon Moyer, charging a slow bouncer to third, came up with the ball cleanly and connected with Jordan Fox at first in time to retire Jake Carlson for the third out.
Starter Andrew Thurman worked with a 2-0 lead after four as UCI capitalized on a leadoff double by D.J. Crumlich, who would late score on an error. Jeff Stephens squeezed home Tommy Reyes for the second run and Reyes then highlighted a three-run fifth with his second home run of the season, a two-run shot over the left-field wall.
Thurman blanked Dartmouth through five innings but ran into trouble in the top of the sixth. Joe Sclafani doubled with one out and took third on a passed ball before scoring on a hard single by Matt Parisi. Chris O'Dowd followed with a hit to left and Parisi and O'Dowd both would score on a deep double to right-centerfield off the bat of Dustin Selzer.
Thurman (2-1) earned the win after pitching six innings and giving up three runs on five hits. Mitch Merten and Mark Trentacosta combined for 1.2 scoreless innings while Race Parmenter collected his second save after pitching 1.1 innings of one-run relief.
Michael Johnson pitched seven innings, giving up five runs on six hits to fall to suffer his first loss. Sclafani went 3 for 3 to lead Dartmouth while Selzer drove in two runs on one hit.
Reyes batted 2 for 3 with two RBI and two runs scored while Spencer Connor added two hits and a run scored. Crumlich and Stephens each drove in a run on one hit.
The series concludes Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
