No. 29 UC Irvine Blanked By Cal Poly
IRVINE, Calif. --- UC Irvine suffered its second shutout of the season, falling to Cal Poly, 6-0, Thursday at Baggett Stadium.
UCI (17-10, 3-1) fell behind 4-0 after two innings as Cal Poly reeled off four consecutive hits off Andrew Thurman in the bottom of the second. Tommy Pluschkell broke the scoreless tie with a two-run double past a diving Dillon Moyer, scoring David Armendariz and Chris Hoo. Mike Miller worked a walk to load the bases and Tim Wise drove in a run on a fielder's choice before Mitch Haniger's sacrifice fly to left would cap the rally.
The Mustangs then laced three straight doubles in the fifth inning to increase the lead to six before Thurman would retire the final two batters of the frame.
UC Irvine put runners on in every inning save two but came up empty against starter Joey Wagman (5-2). The Anteaters were unable to put together consecutive hits until the sixth when Connor Spencer and Jeff Stephens hit clean singles and then advanced one base on a wild pitch. However, Wagman rebounded by striking out the next two batters to stifle the threat.
Ramirez led off the ninth inning with a single off reliever Reed Reilly and Kris Paulino was granted first base on catcher's interference to put runners on first and second with no outs. However, pinch hitter Tyler Krause hit the first pitch from Reilly squarely but right at Evan Busby, who doubled up Ramirez at second. Reilly then struck out Taylor Sparks to end the game.
Thurman gave up a season-high six runs on seven hits while striking out six and in five innings to fall to 2-2. Evan Brock and Mark Trentacosta each dealt one shutout inning in relief and Sam Moore made his collegiate debut, striking out one in a perfect eighth.
D.J. Crumlich went 3 for 4 to lead UCI while Ramirez chipped in two hits.
Wagman dealt eight innings, striking out four and scattering seven hits to improve to 5-2. Pluschkell led the Mustangs with two RBI on two hits.
