Anteaters Swept By Cal Poly
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. --- UC Irvine (17-12, 3-3) gave up four runs in the first and was held to a lone run in an 8-1 loss to Cal Poly Saturday at Baggett Stadium.
Cal Poly roughed up starter Phillip Ferragamo scoring four runs on six singles to chase the right-hander from the game in the first inning.
The Mustangs struck again in the third against Jimmy Litchfield, scoring two runs on a double from Chris Hoo and tacked on a run in the sixth off Nick Hoover. Cal Poly capped the scoring on a home run from David Amendariz in the eighth inning off Race Parmenter.
The Anteaters looked to have a rally started in the fourth. Following a single by Jordan Fox, Connor Spencer hit a first-pitch offering from starter Kyle Bruggemann that laced Fox in the foot for UCI's first out. Jeff Stephens bounced into a fielder's choice that erased UCI's lead runner for a second time before Christian Ramirez grounded out to first to end the inning.
UCI's lone run came in the fifth. Jerry McClanahan, who had reached safely in five straight plate appearances stemming from Friday's contest, drew his second walk of the day and took second on Dillon Moyer's single up the middle. D.J. Crumlich was hit by the pitch to load the bases and McClanahan beat the throw from right on Tommy Reyes' sacrifice fly. That would be all as a grounder by Fox was handled by first baseman Tommy Pluschkell.
In the ninth, Kris Paulino drew a four-pitch walk from reliever Matt Imhof and Scott Gottschling was hit by the pitch. McClanahan, who was 1 for 2 on the day, singled through the right side off reliever Chase Johnson but right-fielder Nick Torres connected with Hoo in time to get pinch-runner Justin Castro at the plate. Dillon Moyer then grounded into a double-play to end the game.
Ferragamo fell to 3-3 while Bruggemann climbed to 4-2 after pitching 7.1 innings and giving up one run on five hits. Armendariz was 4 for 4 with two RBI to lead the Mustangs while Fox had two hits to pace the Anteaters.
