Anteaters Beat Aztecs To Get Back Into Win Column

IRVINE, Calif. --- UC Irvine punched out 10 runs on 13 hits to come away with a 10-5 triumph over San Diego State Tuesday at Cicerone Field at Anteater Ballpark.

Tommy Reyes and Jordan Fox each drove in two runs on three hits while Connor Spencer tied a career-high with three RBI on two hits to lead the 'Eaters.

It was Spencer who drove in the game-winning run in the first, stroking a two-out hit through the right side to score Fox, who had singled and taken second on the throwing error by Tim Zier. Spencer came through again in the bottom of the fifth with another two-out hit, driving in D.J. Crumlich and Fox with a hit to right to give UCI a 3-0 lead. Kris Paulino followed with an RBI single to drive in Spencer.

The Aztecs, who were held to two hits through the first five innings by the duo of Crosby Slaught and Mitch Merten, broke through in the sixth with two runs. Tanner Reibenspies led off with a single and took second on the error by Crumlich before coming around to score on a wild pitch. Zier followed with an RBI double to cut the lead in half.

Reyes came up clutch in the sixth with a hard single that scored Chris Rabago for the 5-2 edge. SDSU answered by tacking on a run in the seventh but UCI broke the game open in the eighth, bringing 11 batters to the plate and scoring five runs. Reyes delivered his second RBI hit and with runners on second and third, Fox bunted for a single, driving in two runs on the play before Jeff Stephens capped the scoring for UCI with a hit to left to plate Fox.

Slaught picked up his 20th career win, pitching three innings and striking out three to improve to 4-3 on the year. Merten logged 2.1 innings, yielding two runs on three hits while Jimmy Litchfield and Evan Brock each allowed an unearned run in a combined 2.2 innings. Sam Moore closed out the game, giving up a run on one hits in the ninth.

Aztec starter Philip Walby fell to 0-3 after giving up an unearned run on three hits in 2.1 innings.  

UCI travels to Long Beach State this weekend in a Black and Blue Rivalry series beginning Friday (Apr. 20).
