Thurman Spins Complete-Game Shutout
IRVINE, Calif. --- Andrew Thurman dealt his third straight complete-game, shutting out UC Santa Barbara, 2-0, Friday at Cicerone Field at Anteater Ballpark. The last Anteater to pitch at least three complete games was Scott Gorgen, who went the distance in four straight starts in 2007.
Thurman lowered his ERA to 2.61 and earned his sixth win (6-2) after holding the Gauchos to four hits while striking out six and walking three.
The sophomore had the leadoff batter reach third in the first two innings but left both runners stranded. The Gauchos threatened in the sixth with runners on first and second with two outs but Thurman struck out Greg Mahle to keep the shutout intact.
UCSB's final opportunity came in the eighth with one out. Lance Roenicke singled and took second on a failed pickoff by Jerry McClanahan. Brandon Twinkon hit a pop up that was caught by Tommy Reyes in short left-field, but with Reyes' back to the infield, Roenicke alertly tagged and advanced to third on the play. Joey Wallace bounced a slow chopper towards the 5-6 hole, but Dillon Moyer charged and scooped it cleanly before firing in time to Jordan Fox to end the inning. That would be all as Thurman came out in the ninth and retired the side in order.
The Anteater offense broke the scoreless tie in the fifth. Moyer drew a leadoff walk and took second on a failed pickoff by starter Kevin Gelinas (2-1). With one out in the inning, Moyer stole third and then scored easily on Reyes' RBI hit through the left side, plating what would be the game-winning run. UCI loaded the bases with a hit by Fox and a walk issued to McClanahan and Connor Spencer delivered with a flare to center to score Reyes.
Fox was 2 for 3 to lead UCI while Reyes and Spencer posted an RBI on one hit
