Whitehouse, making his first official start since 2011, remains undefeated after pitching 6.1 solid innings while striking out six and walking one. Limiting the Bears to just two hits, Whitehouse improved to a career mark of 5-0. He recorded a 4-0 mark in 2011 and did not register a decision in 10 appearances in his freshman campaign.
Kyle Hooper, who also utilized a redshirt year last season, entered in relief for Whitehouse and fanned four in 2.2 innings while yielding a lone hit. Hooper was 3-1 with a 1.30 ERA last season before suffering a season-ending injury.
Connor Spencer, who had three hits for the 'Eaters in the series opener, tacked on two more today, batting 2 for 3 with an RBI and a run scored. Spencer doubled to lead off the second inning and scored what would be the eventual game-winning run on catcher Jerry McClanahan's clutch single through the left side. McClanahan would come around to score on a double by shortstop Chris Rabago, giving UCI a 2-0 lead.
In the fourth, UCI capitalized on a pair of walks bring in a run on a grounder from first baseman Ronnie Shaeffer.
Grant Palmer, making his Anteater debut, continued the scoring by punching a single past a drawn-in infield to plate Scott Gottschling, who had led off the inning with a triple. Spencer struck again for UCI with a two-out hit up the middle, allowing pinch-runner Justin Castro to score from second.
Starter Max Garner fell to 0-1 after yielding three runs on three hits in 3.1 innings.
