IRVINE, Calif. --- Dominique Taylor belted a two-run home run in the bottom of the third to lead No. 21 UC Irvine to a 6-1 win over CSU Bakersfield Tuesday at Cicerone Field at Anteater Ballpark.
The round-tripper was the first for the centerfielder, who was 2 for 4, and gave UCI the go-ahead run to snap a 1-1 tie. Taylor Sparks extended the inning with a double to left and plated the fourth run of the frame on a single up the middle by Ronnie Shaeffer.
With UCI trailing 1-0, Scott Gottschling led off the third with a walk and took second on the sacrifice bunt from Mikey Duarte. Grant Palmer punched a 1-1 pitch that dropped for a single and then got past Garrett Pierce, allowing Gottschling to score the tying run. UCI added two runs in the eighth on an RBI groundout from Connor Spencer and a passed ball.
Junior Evan Brock hurled three innings of one-hit baseball and struck out three to earn his first win (1-0) of the season. Phillip Ferragamo added a hitless inning and Jimmy Litchfield blanked the Roadrunners for two innings. Race Parmenter dealt a hitless ninth as the Anteater relievers limited CSUB to two hits in the final seven innings. Starter Elliot Surrey pitched two innings and yielded a run on three hits while striking out two in the no-decision.
The Roadrunners score their lone run in the first on a hit from Cael Brockmeyer to drive in Dylan Christensen from second.
CSUB starter Taylor Aikenhead fell to 2-1 after giving up four runs on five hits in seven innings. .
UCI travels to BYU to take on the Cougars this Thursday through Saturday.
