Baseball:

The UC Irvine baseball program, under second-year head coach Dave Serrano, recorded a 36-24 overall record and received its second NCAA Tournament berth in three years. The Anteaters were defeated in a pair of one-run games at the Malibu Regional, losing 3-2 to UCLA and 5-4 against Missouri in an elimination game that lasted 14 innings. The Anteaters' 36 wins were the highest number of victories since 1980 and the team also posted the program's highest conference finish in five years, placing third with an 11-10 Big West record. The team set a UCI record in stolen bases (107) and sacrifice hits (90) and strung together a nine-game win streak, the longest in the program's Division I history.

The pitching staff posted the second-best ERA in the Big West at 3.45, which was also 15th-best in the nation at the conclusion of the season. Freshman pitcher Scott Gorgen became UCI's second Big West Freshman Pitcher of the Year and the seventh Collegiate Baseball Freshman All-American after posting a 7-5 record with a 2.54 ERA. Gorgen was also tabbed Freshman All-American by Baseball America and Rivals.com. Gorgen collected Big West Player of the Week honors after pitching a combined shutout against Hawaii and would later combine for the shutout against then-No. 1 Cal State Fullerton. Gorgen, who ended the season ranked 54th in the nation in ERA (2.54), was joined on the all-conference second team by senior Jaime Martinez and junior Cody Cipriano while junior Blair Erickson was named all-conference honorable mention, giving UCI four honorees for the fourth consecutive year.

Martinez became UC Irvine's all-time home run leader with 21 over his career, snapping a 32-year old record and passing former Anteater Jeff Malinoff's total of 16 (1971-74). Martinez led the team with 57 RBI and moved into fifth in the career records with 122. Martinez was a Big West Player of the Week honoree after batting .500 against Cal Poly and leading UCI to its first Big West series win of the season. Cipriano was named the team's Most Valuable Player after leading the Anteaters with a .354 batting average and totaling 18 doubles to tie for seventh in the season annals. Cipriano also topped the team with 68 hits and was second with 16 stolen bases. He earned a Big West Player of the Week award after hitting .529 with five RBI and four runs scored against UC Riverside as UCI clinched third place with the series win.

Junior closer Blair Erickson became second in the Big West career records with 40 saves and converted the second-highest number of saves in the UCI season records with 13 and ends the season ranked 12th in the country. The right-hander was selected to the NCBWA Midseason Stopper of the Year watch list and picked up his second Big West Pitcher of the Week nod this year. Erickson boasted a 2.06 ERA to place third in the season records as well as going undefeated with a 5-0 mark. Two pitching records were rewritten as senior Glenn Swanson became the first Anteater in 32 years to hurl a no-hitter. Swanson used 89 pitches and walked just one batter in a 7-0 win over San Diego. Swanson was named Collegiate Baseball Louisville Slugger National Player of the Week, Big West Pitcher of the Week and honored by CollegeBaseballInsider.com, the College Baseball Foundation as well as being named a Breitbard Star of the Month by the San Diego Hall of Champions Sports Museum for his effort. Swanson also surpassed a second 32-year old mark when he passed former Anteater Gary Wheelock (1972-74) to become UCI's all-time strikeout leader with 298 strikeouts. Swanson posted a winning season in three of his four years and accumulated 25 wins to tie for fourth in the record books. The lefty also pitched in four of UCI's six shutouts this season. Swanson received the Best Teammate award, which was renamed the "Glenn Swanson Best Teammate" award.

Junior Justin Cassel also inserted himself into several of the UCI records this season. Named the team's Most Valuable Pitcher, the right-hander became fourth all-time with 48 career starts and logged 317.1 innings pitched to sit fifth. Cassel can also be found in the top 10 in career wins (20), ERA (3.57) and strikeouts (241). His 18 starts this season tie for first and Cassel now sits in sixth place with 134 innings pitched this season. He struck out 99 batters (6th), including a 15 strikeout performance against UC Santa Barbara to earn Collegiate Baseball National Player of the Week and Big West Pitcher of the Week honors.

Freshman Ben Orloff was named the team's Best Defensive Player and received the HAM (Hustle-Attitude-Mentality) award. Orloff finished the season ranked No. 1 in the nation in sacrifice hits (.46) while catcher Aaron Lowenstein, who was the team's Most Improved Player, was ranked 19th (.27). Orloff also was ranked 35th in the “toughest to strikeout” category (15.2). Three UCI players were selected in the Major League draft in June. Cassel was the team's highest pick this season and was a seventh-round selection by the Chicago White Sox. Erickson was a 10th-round choice by the St. Louis Cardinals and outfielder Spike McDougall was taken in the 39th round by the Florida Marlins. Glenn Swanson, who was drafted in 2005 by the Texas Rangers, signed a deal with the organization prior to the draft. Jaime Martinez, Kevin Mayer, Matt Morris, Gary Nakashima, Bryan Petersen and Geoff Thorne were Big West Scholar-Athletes.
