Pat Shine enters his sixth season with the UC Irvine Baseball coaching staff. Serving in his second term with the Anteaters, Shine is the program's associate head coach and the program's recruiting coordinator. In 2008, Shine spearheaded an effort that brought in the 22nd-best recruiting class in the nation (Collegiate Baseball). Two Anteaters from that class earned conference honors last season as Ronnie Shaeffer was tabbed a second-team choice and Tommy Reyes picked up honorable mention honors. Five others from the group saw a considerable amount of time on the field with Cory Olson and D.J. Crumlich earning starting roles on the team. Jordan Leyland, Jordan Fox and Matt Summers also made significant contributions for the Anteaters in their freshman campaigns. Prior to joining the Anteater program, Shine served as the coach at Cal State L.A. in 2007, where he led the Golden Eagles to the NCAA Division II West Region championship and was named American Baseball Coaches Association West Region Coach of the Year. Cal State L.A. posted a record 45 victories (45-17-1) and advanced to the NCAA Division II semi-finals for the first time in school history last season. During his first stint at UC Irvine (2002-04), Shine was an assistant for former head coach John Savage. In 2004, the Anteaters made their first NCAA post-season appearance, traveling to the Notre Dame Regional and concluding the season with a 34-23-1 record. In 2005 he joined Savage at UCLA, where he was the top assistant and recruiting coordinator for the Bruins. Shine's first incoming class was tabbed No. 5 by Baseball America and he helped the Bruins to an NCAA regional berth in 2006. In 2000, he served as assistant coach at New Mexico, helping the Lobos claim the Mountain West Conference title. Prior to his year in Albuquerque, Shine spent two seasons (1998-99) as a volunteer coach at California, working with the Bears' outfielders and serving as a hitting/baserunning coach. Also in 2000, Shine served as the pitching coach/interim manager of the Brewster Whitecaps and led the club to the Cape Cod League tile. From 1998-99, he was manager/pitching coach of the St. Cloud Riverbats in the Northwoods League, leading that squad to the 1998 league title and was named the league's 1999 Manager of the Year. Shine played collegiately at Whitworth College in Spokane, Wash., before transferring to Gonzaga, where he was named a team captain and led the Bulldogs to a third-place conference finish. He earned his Bachelor's Degree in speech communication with a minor in business management from Gonzaga in 1995. |
