No. 20 UC Irvine Rallies From Behind to Defeat Loyola Marymount

IRVINE, Calif. --- No. 20 UC Irvine recorded its second come-from-behind victory in as many games to defeat Loyola Marymount, 6-5, Monday at Anteater Ballpark. The win lifted UCI to 3-0 on the season while LMU dropped to 1-2 overall. The Anteaters were held hitless through the first six innings by six Lion hurlers, but managed to score twice on a bases loaded walk in the second and a balk that scored Brock Bardeen from third base in the fourth. LMU led early in the game, scoring two runs in the first off starter Christian Bergman on a fielder's choice and a passed ball. The Lions took a 3-1 lead in the fourth as Andy Preston doubled and eventually scored from third on a wild pitch. LMU added to the lead with single runs in the fifth and one in the sixth for the 6-2 advantage. UCI struck in the seventh inning, sending nine batters to the plate. Third baseman Eric Deragisch recorded UCI's first hit of the game with a single over his counterpart and reached second on an error by LMU second baseman Jonathan Johnson. Centerfielder Ollie Linton followed with a single up the middle to load the bases for shortstop Ben Orloff who reached on a fielder's choice, scoring Deragisch. Infielder Ryan Fisher laced a sharp RBI-single to right and designated hitter Francis Larson came up with is first hit of the night with a single through the left side to tie the game at 5-5. Outfielder Brock Bardeen's single through the right side drove in Fisher for the eventual game-winner.
UCI reliever Eric Pettis earned his first save, striking out one in two perfect innings. Reliever Kyle Necke was credited with the win (1-0) after striking out one and walking one in a hitless inning of relief. Bergman struck out two in 4.2 innings, giving up four runs (two earned) on seven hits in the no-decision. Lion starter Lee Roberts retired the Anteaters in order in the first before handing the ball off to the LMU bullpen. Chris Eusebio registered the loss after giving up four runs (three earned) on five hits in 1/3 innings to drop to 0-1. A.J. LaMonda, Ryan Wheeler and Preston each had a pair of hits to lead LMU. UC Irvine continues its home stand Wednesday against USC at 7:00 p.m. |
