Feb. 26, 2010
MYRTLE BEACH, SC--- North Carolina State scored five runs in the bottom of the 10th to erase a 4-2 deficit and defeat No. 4 UC Irvine, 7-4, Thursday at BB&T Field.
With one out in the inning, first baseman Danny Canela drove an 0-1 pitch down the right-field line off UCI reliever Kyle Necke to tie the score at 4-4. After issuing an intentional walk to right-fielder Drew Poulk, left-fielder Russell Wilson hit a three-run walk-off home run to left-centerfield as the undefeated Wolfpack improved to 5-0.
NC State scored first, getting an RBI double from Poulk in the bottom of the second but the Anteaters (3-1) responded with an unearned run in the third. After Casey Stevenson drew a leadoff walk, Tommy Reyes hit a two-out grounder to short but Canela dropped the ball and Stevenson scored from second base on the play.
Reyes also factored in UCI's scoring in the sixth. After working a one-out walk, Reyes advanced to second on a balk and took third on Brian Hernandez's grounder to short. Reyes then scored on a wild pitch from Cory Mazzoni for the one-run lead.
The Wolfpack knotted the score in the seventh, putting runners on first and third with no outs. Matt Summers, in relief of starter Christian Bergman, induced a double-play grounder to second, allowing Tarran Senay to score.
Stevenson gave UCI the lead in the 10th, tripling and then scoring on Ryan Fisher's pinch-hit double. Fisher would cross the plate on a double from Reyes to give the Anteaters a 4-2 edge.
Necke falls to 0-1 after giving up five runs on three hits in 1/3 inning. Starter Christian Bergman did not earn a decision for the second straight week. The right-hander allowed two runs on six hits while striking out five and walking two. Matt Summers gave UCI an inning of one-hit relief while Andy Lines struck out two and yielded a hit in the ninth.
Mazzoni allowed two unearned runs on one hits and struck out four in six innings. Rob Chamra improved to 2-0 after 1/3 inning of relief.
