UC Irvine Loses to Texas A&M

HOUSTON, Tex. --- No. 1 Texas A&M broke a 1-1 tie with seven runs in the sixth inning and went on to defeat fifth-ranked UC Irvine 9-2 Friday in the opening game of the 2009 Houston College Classic. The loss dropped UC Irvine to 3-2 while the Aggies improved to 6-1.

The Anteaters struck first, scoring a run on Sean Madigan's double to drive in Casey Stevenson in the bottom of the third but Texas A&M tied the game in the fifth, getting a run on a wild pitch.

The Aggies then broke the game open, bringing 12 batters to the plate for an 8-1 advantage with three doubles and a two-run home run highlighting the inning.

Sean Madigan led UC Irvine with two hits, going 2 for 4 with a RBI while Casey Stevenson was 1 for 3 with an RBI and a run scored.

UCI starter Daniel Bibona fell to 1-1 after giving up five runs on seven hits and striking out six. Reliever Matt Dufour allowed three runs on three hits in 2/3 innings. Cory Hamilton yielded a run on one hits in two innings of work while Nick Hoover pitched a scoreless ninth.

Aggie starter Brooks Raley held UCI to two runs on five hits while striking out two and walking four in six innings. Kyle Thebeau picked up his first save of the season after three shutout innings.

The Anteaters face Houston Saturday at 12:00 p.m. (CT).
