IRVINE, Calif. --- Junior All-American Scott Gorgen held San Francisco to one hit and went on to record his seventh career complete-game as No. 20 UC Irvine shut out the Dons, 4-0, Friday at Anteater Ballpark. Gorgen recorded a career-high 12 strikeouts in the win as the Anteaters improved to 5-0 overall.
Gorgen struck out five of the first six batters he faced before yielding a single to Ryan Lipkin to lead off the third. The right-hander then retired the next 19 batters before issuing his first walk to Bobby Ethel in the top of the ninth.
Designated hitter Francis Larson and infielder Ryan Fisher provided the UCI offense in the third. Ben Orloff reached on a one-out single and stole second. USF pitcher Mitchell Bialosky mishandled Ollie Linton's sacrifice bunt attempt to put runners on first and third for Fisher who hit a fly ball to left to score Orloff. Larson then singled up the middle to cash in Linton. UCI added a pair of runs as Fisher delivered again in the eighth inning with a two-run single to plate Orloff and Linton.
Larson and outfielder Sean Madigan each had a pair of hits to lead UCI.
Bialosky dropped to 0-2 after striking out four in seven innings. The right-hander allowed three runs on six hits in the losing effort (3-3).
The series continues Saturday at 1:00 p.m. at Anteater Ballpark.
