No. 13 UC Irvine Forces Rubber Game With 7-3 Win Over No. 22 Tulane
March 8, 2008 NEW ORLEANS, LA --- Centerfielder Ollie Linton had a career-high four RBI to lead UC Irvine to a 7-3 win over 22nd-ranked Tulane Saturday at Greer Field at Turchin Stadium. The win lifted UCI to 9-1 overall while the Green Wave dropped to 8-4. Linton was 2 for 3, including his first home run of the season and an RBI sacrifice bunt. Catcher Aaron Lowenstein added a pair of RBI and Eric Deragisch was 2 for 4 with a run batted in. Ryan Fisher led UCI's 10-hit attack going 3 for 5 and scoring twice. UCI starting pitcher Bryce Stowell pitched 5.1 innings, striking gout five and giving up three runs on six hits to improve to 2-0. Daniel Bibona added 1.2 innings of one-hit relief while closer Eric Pettis struck out one and gave up a hit in the final 1.2 innings to record his third save of the season. The Anteaters chased Tulane starter Aaron Loup from the game in the second with four runs. Fisher led off the inning and scored UCI's first run and Eric Deragisch plated Sean Madigan with a two-out single up the middle. Deragisch and Tony Asaro, who doubled to right, crossed the plate on Linton's single through the right side. Lowenstein added a run in the third with a double to right and Linton gave UCI a six-run lead with a solo home run to start the fourth inning.
Tulane cut into the lead in the bottom of the fourth on Andrew Scelfo's two-run blast off Stowell. Seth Henry followed with a run-scoring double to bring the Green Wave to within three runs at 6-3.
UCI added a run in the eighth, capitalizing on a pair of Tulane errors. Orloff reached first on a fielding error by shortstop Henry and then reached third on a stolen base and a throwing error by the catcher Jared Dyer. Linton's bunt on the squeeze play scored Orloff for the 7-3 advantage. Tulane rallied in the eighth drawing a pair of one-out walks but Warren McFadden fouled out to first and Henry flew out to right field to end the inning. Andrew Rodgers paced the team going 2 for 2. Loup fell to 0-1 after giving up four runs on four hits in 1.2 innings. The two teams meet in the series finale Sunday at 10:00 a.m. (PT). |
