IRVINE, Calif. --- Sean Madigan drove in the eventual game-winning run as No. 22 UC Irvine edged No. 19 Connecticut, 5-4, Tuesday at Cicerone Field at Anteater Ballpark. With the win, the Anteaters improve to 9-1 overall while the Huskies fall to 5-5.

Jordan Leyland led UCI with two RBI while Drew Hillman and Ronnie Shaeffer each posted two hits. Madigan and D.J. Crumlich each registered an RBI on one hit.

The Anteaters opened the game with a two-run first as Jordan Leyland slapped a single up the middle to drive in Crumlich and Jordan Fox, who drew consecutive walks from starter Brian Ward.

UCI struck again in the second as Crumlich's single through the left side scored Ronnie Shaeffer, who had singled to lead off the frame and took second on the sacrifice by Scott Gottschling.

UConn answered in the third. John Andreoli reached first on a bunt single and then stole second. A groundout put Andreoli on third for Nick Ahmed, who hit a 1-1 pitch to left for the RBI single. Ahmed took third on a hit by Mike Nemeth and then scored on the sacrifice fly by George Springer, cutting UCI's lead to 3-2.

Doug Elliot tied the score at 3-3 for UConn with a run-scoring single off reliever Andrew Thurman.

UCI answered quickly in the bottom of the inning. Shaeffer belted a double to left-centerfield to lead off the frame and then took third on a hit by Gottschling. Dillon Moyer drew his second walk of the night to load the bases and Shaeffer would score on a groundout to short.

The Huskies responded again. With runners on first and second with one out in the top of the eighth, Ryan Fuller hit a double to left off Phillip Ferragamo, scoring Nemeth from second. The Huskies waved L.J. Mazzilli from first but Hillman and Crumlich connected with Shaeffer on the relay in time to get Mazzilli at the plate. Ferragamo then retired Doug Elliot on a grounder to short to end the inning with the scored tied at 4-4.

The Anteaters opened the eighth with a long double to left by Hillman. Reliever David Fisher's pickoff attempt at second sailed into centerfield, allowing Hillman to take third and the outfielder would score easily on Madigan's double to left.

Brian Hernandez entered in the top of the ninth. After issuing a leadoff walk to Billy Ferriter, Hernandez rebounded by retiring the side in order for the save.
