IRVINE, Calif. --- Drew Hillman and D.J. Crumlich combined for six RBI as No. 22 UC Irvine handed Sacramento State a 9-5 loss Friday at Cicerone Field at Anteater Ballpark. With the win, UCI climbs to 10-1 overall while the Hornets drop to 4-10.
Hillman went 2 for 3 and blasted his second home run of the season, a three-run shot off starter Tanner Mendonca in the first inning. Hillman also hit an RBI triple and scored twice on the evening. Crumlich was 4 for 5 at the plate with a double and a pair of run-scoring singles.
UCI starter Matt Summers went 4.1 innings, striking out three and walked three while giving up four runs (two earned) on six hits in the no-decision. Junior Nick Hoover struck out two and walked two in 3.2 shutout innings to earn his first win of the season (1-0).
Crumlich led off the Anteater first with a double to left and Jordan Fox drove a single past diving third baseman Blake Miller to plate Crumlich. Brian Hernandez drew a full-count walk and Hillman hit a 2-0 offering over the left-field fence to give UCI a 4-0 lead.
Sacramento State got on the board in the second as a throwing error allowed Andrew Ayers to score from second.
Hernandez tacked on a run in the bottom of the frame with a hard single up the middle to score Crumlich from third. Crumlich figured again in the third with a clutch two-out hit to left to drive in Sean Madigan.
The Hornets responded again, scoring twice in the fourth as a second Anteater miscue led to a run and was followed by an RBI groundout, cutting the lead to 6-3.
Following Hillman's RBI triple in the fourth, the outfielder crossed home plate on the sacrifice fly from Madigan and Crumlich's RBI hit in the eighth would cap the scoring for the Anteaters.
Mendonca fell to 1-2 after giving up eight runs on nine hits and walking five in four innings.
The series continues Saturday at 2:00 p.m.
