No. 8 UC Irvine Shuts Out Hawaii Behind Scott Gorgen's One-Hitter
March 14, 2008
IRVINE, Calif. --- All-American Scott Gorgen limited Hawaii to one hit and struck out nine to lead eighth-ranked UC Irvine to a 9-0 shutout over Hawaii Friday at Anteater Ballpark. Gorgen and the Anteaters improved to 12-1 overall while Hawaii fell to 7-10.
Gorgen retired the first 12 batters in order before Jonathan Hee reached second on a two-base error. A second error in the inning put runners on first and second with two outs but Derek McDonald grounded out to third to leave both runners stranded.
McDonald marred Gorgen's no-hitter in the seventh with a single up the middle with one out but right-fielder Sean Madigan made a diving catch in foul territory and McDonald was later forced at second on the fielder's choice to end the inning.
Freshman Crosby Slaught gave up a pair of hits in the ninth but preserved UCI's fifth shutout of the season.
The Anteater offense was led by first baseman Jeff Cusick, who drove in a career-high five RBI on 2 for 5 hitting. UCI jumped on starting pitcher Jared Alexander in the bottom of the first, with Cusick driving in what would be the game-winning run with a sharp single to right. Ben Orloff scored on a groundout by Brock Bardeen to give UCI a 2-0 lead.
Second baseman Ryan Fisher's sacrifice in the third inning drove in Linton, who was 3 for 4 with four runs scored. Fisher came up with a clutch hit again in the fifth and Cusick added a run batted in as UCI widened the lead to 5-0.
The scoring continued in the eighth as Madigan tripled to lead off the Anteater eighth and crossed the plate on Aaron Lowenstein's one-out double. Linton drew a walk and Orloff singled to load the bases for Cusick, who cleared the bases with a three-run double. Orloff had four hits on the day while Fisher finished with a pair of RBI.
UC Irvine and Hawaii will play a doubleheader Saturday, beginning at 1:00 p.m.
