IRVINE, Calif. --- UC Irvine was held to just three hits in a 4-0 loss to Loyola Marymount in the first game of a double-header Saturday at George C. Page Stadium.
Lion starter Alex Gillingham stymied the Anteater offense, striking out 11 and walking one in the complete-game effort.
UCI’s Andrew Thurman fell to 1-1 with the loss, pitching five innings and walking five while giving up three runs (two earned) on seven hits. Reliever Phillip Ferragamo pitched a personal-best four innings, striking out two while holding LMU to a run on four hits.
The Lions took the early lead in the bottom of the second, putting runners on first and second with one out for Bret Dahlson, who doubled to left, giving LMU a 1-0 edge.
LMU tacked on a pair of runs in the fourth. Dahlson led off the frame with a single and Jonathan Johnson hit a one-out double down the right-field line. Johnson was cut down trying to steal third but Matt Koch drew a two-out walked and crossed the plate on a timely single to center by Evan Simonitch, giving the Lions a 3-0 lead.
The Lions struck again in the seventh, stringing three consecutive singles to plate a run off Ferragamo.
Brian Hernandez had two hits for the Anteaters.
