LOS ANGELES, Calif. --- Andy Lines pitched a personal-best five innings and struck out a career-high five batters to lead No. 14 UC Irvine to a 4-1 win over Loyola Marymount in the second game of the double-header as the Anteaters collected the series win. UCI improves to 14-2 overall while the Lions fall to 13-8.
Lines, in his first start of the season, did not walk a batter and scattered five hits to improve to 1-0. Nick Hoover pitched 2.1 hitless innings and Jimmy Litchfield earned his first save after striking out one in 1.2 innings.
Outfielder Scott Gottschling was 2 for 3 with an RBI to pace the Anteater offense while Sean Madigan added two hits. D.J. Crumlich, Brian Hernandez and Jordan Leyland each drove in a one on one hit in the win.
The Anteaters loaded the bases in the top of the first and Leyland was issued a one-out walk to push across Crumlich, who was walked to start the game.
Gottschling then delivered for UCI in the top of the fourth, hitting a clutch two-out single to left to score Madigan from third following the oufielder’s triple past the first-base bag.
Hernandez knocked in a run with two outs in the UCI seventh and Crumlich hit a hard single to center in the top of the eighth to score Madigan, extending the Anteater lead to 4-0.
LMU marred the shutout effort in the bottom of the eighth when Matt Koch capitalized on consecutive one-out singles with a double to left to score Matt Lowenstein. However, with runners on second and third, the Anteaters went to Jimmy Litchfield who struck out Shon Roe and popped up Evan Simonitch to end the Lion threat.
