LAS VEGAS, Nev. --- UC Irvine fell to 14-3 overall following a 4-3 loss to UNLV (18-6) Tuesday at Wilson Stadium.
Drew Hillman paced the Anteaters, going 3 for 3 while Jon Hurst delivered a game-tying pinch-hit single. Starter Kyle Hooper gave up three runs in the UNLV first, striking out two and scattering five hits but did not figure in the decision. Nick Hoover was tagged with the loss, dropping to 1-1 after giving up the game-winning run in the bottom of the fourth.
The Rebels jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first on a run-scoring single by Trevor Kirk and a two-run double by Richie Jimenez.
The Anteaters evened it up in the fourth. Brian Hernandez and Drew Hillman hit back-to-back singles to lead off the frame and Scott Gottschling was hit by the pitch to load the bases with two outs. Tommy Reyes worked a full-count walk to force across Hernandez and Hurst greeted reliever Max Javate with a single to center to score Hillman and Gottschling.
However, UNLV responded quickly in the bottom of the inning, capitalizing on a leadoff double with a scoring a run on a sacrifice fly to reclaim the lead at 4-3.
UCI's offense managed just one hit after the fourth inning. UNLV reliever Max Javate earned the win (3-1) after pitching 2.1 scoreless innings. Brady Zuniga retired nine straight to earn his first save of the season.
The Anteaters travel to Gonzaga for a weekend series beginning this Friday (Mar. 25).
