SPOKANE, Wash. --- UC Irvine suffered its third shutout of the season with a 3-0 loss to Gonzaga Saturday at Patterson Baseball Complex. The loss, UCI’s third straight, drops the Anteaters to 14-5 overall and gives the team its first weekend series loss.

UCI was led by Brian Hernandez and Sean Madigan, who combined for four of the team’s six hits. Starter Andy Lines lasted just 1.1 innings, walking four and giving up a run on one hit to fall to 1-1.

Lines ran into trouble in the Gonzaga first, walking leadoff hitter Billy Moon and then giving up a single and a second base on balls to load the bases. Lines struck out Tyler Chism but then gave up a full-count walk to Marco Gonzales to force across Moon.

The Bulldogs added a run in the third as Keegan Acker singled off reliever Kyle Hooper to score Gonzales, who had been walked for the second time in the game.

Gonzaga centerfielder Royce Bolinger doubled off Hooper to lead off the seventh and took third on the fly ball to center before scoring on a groundout by Chism.

The Anteaters, whose scoreless streak extended to 17 innings, threatened in the seventh inning. UCI loaded the bases with one out but Gonzaga reliever Andy Hunter induced an inning-ending double-play grounder to short to end the threat.

Starter Tyler Olson pitched 6.1 innings, striking out seven and walking two to improve to 3-1. Hunter hurled 2.2 hitless innings to earn his first save of the year.

Kyle Hooper pitched five innings, giving up two runs on six hits while Nick Hoover pitched a perfect eighth for the Anteaters.

The series concludes Sunday at noon.
