Eric Deragisch Has Career Day as No. 10 UC Irvine Sweeps No. 19 Cal Poly
March 29, 2009 IRVINE, Calif. --- Eric Deragisch and DJ Crumlich combined for five RBI and Eric Pettis earned his seventh save of the season as the 10th-ranked Anteaters swept No. 19 Cal Poly with a 7-6 win Sunday at Anteater Ballpark. With the win, UCI improves to 16-7 overall and 3-0 in the Big West while the Mustangs dropped to 17-7 (0-3) overall. Deragisch put up a perfect performance at the plate with a career-high four hits, including his first home run of the season. The senior added three singles and finished with two RBI while Crumlich delivered a bases-clearing double and finished 1 for 4 with three RBI. Also driving in runs for UCI were Jeff Cusick and Francis Larson. UCI starter Crosby Slaught allowed five runs on nine hits in four innings before giving way to reliever Brock Bardeen, who held the Mustangs to a run on five hits in three innings to collect his fourth win (4-0) of the season. Pettis scattered three hits and struck out three in two innings for the save. The Mustangs jumped on the board with a run in the first but the Anteaters responded with two in the bottom of the inning. Ben Orloff reached first on a four-pitch walk and moved to third on a single by Deragisch before scoring on Cusick's sacrifice fly. Larson singled to right to plate Deragisch and give the team a 2-1 lead. Cal Poly tied the game in the second on Ryan Lee's run-scoring single but Crumlich's double in the third would put the Anteaters up 5-2.
Cal Poly battled again tying the score in the fourth at 5-5 as Matt Jensen and Wes Dorrell delivered RBI hits following a sacrifice fly from Lee.
In the Anteater fourth, Deragisch jumped on a 2-2 pitch from starter Mason Radeke for a two-run home run, giving UCI the go-ahead and eventual game-winning runs. Radeke fell to 1-1 after giving up seven runs (six earned) on eight hits in 3.1 innings. Dorrell led the team with three hits and three RBI. |
