April 8, 2011
FULLERTON, Calif. --- UC Irvine put together a complete game with solid pitching and potent offense as the Anteaters recorded a 15-3 win over No. 12 Cal State Fullerton Friday at Goodwin Field. The win marks the largest margin of victory against the Titans as UCI improves to 20-6 overall and 4-0 in the Big West.
Matt Summers (4-2) pitched 7.1 strong innings, holding the Titans hitless through the first four innings en route to his fourth win of the season. The right-hander struck out eight and scattered four hits while giving up two runs. Summers hit Ivory Thomas to lead off the Titan first but retired the next nine batters before issuing a base-on-balls to lead off the fourth.
The Anteaters (20-6, 4-0 Big West) provided plenty of support for Summers and was led by Sean Madigan, who tied a season-high with four RBI to go along with three hits and two runs scored. Christian Ramirez posted three RBI on three hits while Ronnie Shaeffer and Jon Hurst had two runs batted in apiece.
UCI, which put runners in scoring position in the first and second frames, broke the scoreless tie in the top of third. Tommy Reyes, who led the team with four runs scored, singled to lead off the inning and advanced to third on a double by D.J. Crumlich. Madigan grounded out to short to plate Reyes for the team's first run. Brian Hernandez followed with a ground-ball to third but the throw to first went high, allowing Crumlich to score and Hernandez to take second on the two-base error. Shaeffer worked a two-out walk before Ramirez belted a two-run triple to give UCI a 4-0 lead. Ramirez then stole home to plate UCI's fifth run of the inning.
The Anteaters tacked on five more runs in the top of the fourth. Jordan Leyland kicked off the inning with a single and Reyes drew a four-pitch walk. Madigan hit a clutch one-out single to score Leyland and Hernandez greeted reliever David Hurlbut with a hit to left to drive in Reyes. Shaeffer extended the inning with a two-out single up the middle with Madigan scoring on the play. Ramirez was issued a base-on-balls to load the bases for Hurst, who capitalized with a two-run single, extending UCI's lead to 10-0.
Three singles loaded the bases for UCI in the top of the fifth and Shaeffer coaxed a walk from reliever Ryan Ackland to force across Reyes. Ramirez punched a two-out single to left, driving in Crumlich and extending the lead to 12-0.
Nick Ramirez broke up the shutout in the bottom of the sixth, hitting a solo home run to put the Titans on the board. Cal State Fullerton scored again in the eighth, putting runners on first and second with one out for Tyler Pill, who doubled to left. Michael Lorenzen followed with a line drive off the shoulder of reliever Phil Ferragamo for an RBI single.
The scoring continued for UCI in the ninth as Madigan delivered again with a long double to left-centerfield, driving in Reyes and Crumlich to widen the margin to 14-3. Madigan would later score on the Titans' third error on the night to cap the scoring.
Jimmy Litchfield picked up for Ferragamo in the Titan eighth and retired the final two batters of the inning, leaving two runners stranded. Drew Sandler pitched a hitless ninth, striking out one and walking one.
CSF's Jake Floethe pitched 3.1 innings, giving up eight runs (four earned) on seven hits to fall to 3-2.
